At Blue Water Media, we are committed to making a positive impact on the world around us.   

In addition to our staff volunteer program, which encourages employees to take time off to volunteer at local charities and community organizations, Blue Water Media donates its resources to assist local non-profit organizations that benefit our community.   Listed below are a few of the organizations that we are proud to support.


Mentor Foundation USA

Blue Water Media is proud of its involvement with Mentor USA, a charitable non-profit that connects the business community with schools in vulnerable communities.  Blue Water Media employees volunteer regularly throughout the year with the organization’s Washington DC chapter, mentoring children and young adults to promote healthy development and reduce the risk of substance abuse.  In addition to encouraging employees to sign up as mentors, Blue Water Media hosts regular Career Days for the students focused on professional development and skill-building for success in the workplace.

On the March, 2012 Career Day, The students and employee volunteers were given the mission to utilize Blue Water Media’s core service areas to create a Cesar Chavez online student magazine. The students first worked with the digital marketing team to understand and develop the Information Architecture, website content, search engine optimization tactics, social media strategy, and overall online marketing plan.  Next, the students collaborated with Blue Water Media web designers to understand and create the overall design standards, brand identity, color palate, and website design templates for the online student magazine.  Finally, they partnered with the development team to understand and create the overall technical development framework for the online Student Magazine and utilize the Drupal content management system to flow copy through the site templates.

The agenda also included plenty of brain teasers, an office tour, a catered lunch, and breakout sessions with senior Blue Water Media staff members.  The key takeaway that Blue Water Media wanted to convey to the students is that each student provides a unique perspective and should attack a problem with creative thinking; and at Blue Water Media we all work as team bringing our diverse skill set together when providing a solution to our clients.

When given the opportunity to reflect on the day’s activities, the student participants were overwhelmingly positive:

“Today was very interesting,” said William Stancil, a Junior at Chavez, “I think I discovered a passion in marketing even though prior to coming here I knew very little about the subject.”  Sophomore Jade Wright echoed his desire to further pursue a career in digital media, while also adding, “I learned that you definitely have to know how to manage your time because you guys have a lot of work to do!” 


TOMS One Day without Shoes

In response to the millions of children in the world that grow up without shoes, staff at DC area web design firm, Blue Water Media, went barefoot for a day in April 2012.  They braved boardrooms, DC city streets and crowded airports sans footwear to participate in the TOMS One Day without Shoes Challenge, which aims to raise awareness of the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child’s life by going without shoes for one day.

Why are shoes so important? 

Many children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or going to school, these children are at risk:

  • A leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted diseases, which can penetrate the skin through bare feet. Wearing shoes can help prevent these diseases, and the long-term physical and cognitive harm they cause.
  • Wearing shoes also prevents feet from getting cuts and sores. Not only are these injuries painful, they also are dangerous when wounds become infected.
  • Many times children can't attend school barefoot because shoes are a required part of their uniform. If they don't have shoes, they don't go to school. If they don't receive an education, they don't have the opportunity to realize their potential.

Why did Blue Water Media participate?

Blue Water Media has always been involved in giving back to the community and has encouraged staff to participate in community service, either through the company or in a personal capacity since it was founded over 11 years ago. After researching TOMS One Day without Shoes campaign goals, it became clear that it met Blue Water Media’s philanthropic objectives, benefiting both those served and employees.

“It’s exciting to support such a worthy, creative and powerful campaign,” says Blue Water Media staff member, Rebecca Rubin.  “Plus it’s a nice addition to ‘business casual’!”
